1915
Born 13th October in Leamington Spa
1920-30
Educated in local Schools
1930-39
Varied work in the Coventry district. Cycle-radio shop; radio factory; bakery; aircraft factory and electrical component wholesaler in Birmingham.
1939
Called up in September and served in the Army in France and Palestine.
1941
Transferred to Commandos. Served in Sudan, Abyssinia, Egypt and Crete where he was taken prisoner-of-war in June. Taken to prisoner-of-war camps in Salonika, Poland and finally at Stalag 383 in Hohenfais, Bavaria.
Met Adrian Heath who encouraged him to be an artist.
1945
Released from POW camp in April. In August married Kathleen Clarke.
1946-47
Moved to Cornwall. Studied at St. Ives School of Painting.
1947
Began period of study at Camberwell School of Art where he was taught by, amongst others, members of the pre-war Euston Road group.
1948
Began to paint abstract works. Completed NDD.
1950
Returned to St. Ives.
1952-54
Employed as visiting lecturer at the Bath Academy of Art.
1954-56
Became Gregory Fellow in Painting at the University of Leeds for two years.
1956
Taught part-time at Leeds College of Art.
1957
Returned to live in St. Ives.
1960
Visited USA for the first time, spending three weeks in New York.
1963
Moved to live and work in Banbury, teaching part-time at Coventry School of Art.
1965
Appointed full-time lecturer in the Department of Fine Art, University of Reading.
1970
Promoted to Reader in the University of Reading.
1974
Moved studio to Newlyn, Cornwall
1977
Promoted to Professor of Painting at the University of Reading.
Awarded the Honourary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the CNAA.
1981
Retired from Reading and was made Professor Emeritus.
